Camp Information

Welcome to Bristol Parks and Recreation's Camp Poppasquaw. We are looking forward to a great summer of 2019 filled with fun and interesting activities for your child. This pamphlet will explain our camp as well as answer some of the questions that you may have.

  • Name- Bristol's town camp is named Camp Poppasquaw. This name reflects the history of the beautiful area where our camp is held.
  • What campers should bring to camp- We highly recommend that you to pack your camper a swim suit, towel, sunscreen, swimming shoes, a water bottle, snack, or money to buy a snack, and lunch, or money to buy lunch if they choose not to participate in the free lunch program.
  • Inclement weather- Our indoor facility is the Quinta-Gamelin Community Center, just a short walk from our summer camp, and in the event of inclement weather, we will either begin camp indoors at that facility or move our camp to that facility if needed. Please consider that the size of our community center will limit the amount of children that we can accommodate safely on rainy days. In the event of extreme weather conditions we may have to cancel camp, so please refer to the town website at under "news flash" on the main page (scroll down) or call the office at 253-1611.
  • Schedule- The camp day begins promptly at 9AM and ends promptly at 3PM. Please pick up your child no later than 3:00. You MUST be on time.
  • Beach- Although we have the beach sand sifted and cleaned, we do not have control over what the tide deposits on our shore.We recommend that children bring aqua-socks or old sneakers for swimming. Don't forget the sunscreen!
  • Behavior- Neither physical nor verbal aggression will be tolerated. Children are encouraged to resolve conflicts in an appropriate manner and without the use of abusive language. Adults will be involved as needed. Parents will receive a notification of discipline or a phone call, and if the behavior continues, the child will not be allowed to return to camp. The Director will make the decision regarding a child's removal on a case-by-case basis. Also, any object or device which may be considered a dangerous weapon will be confiscated and the child will be sent home immediately after we contact the parents and/or proper authorities.
  • Cell phone use- Speak to your child about cell phone use and texting while at camp. Please encourage your child to be active, as phone use and texting are distracting and unnecessary. 
  • Lost and found- We have a lost and found, but please remind your child to be responsible for his or her own property (we recommend labeling your child's clothing and belongings if possible). As you are aware, cell phones, iPods, handheld gaming devices, etc., are expensive and/or delicate and one should consider the risk of the device being lost, damaged, or stolen when allowing your child to bring such devices to camp. The Department of Parks and Recreation is not responsible for lost, damaged, or stolen property.
  • Bus behavior- There is no supervision at the pick-up and drop-off locations. Supervision begins once the children board the bus. Bus behavior will be monitored closely, and any misbehavior may result in the child being suspended from travel on the bus. No food or drinks are allowed on the bus.
  • Skate park- The skate park is not a supervised area. Children will not be allowed to visit the skate park while attending the camp day. Any child who is registered in camp found at the skate park during camp hours will be returned to their group. Parents who allow their child to use the skate park during camp hours must give their child a written permission slip each morning which will be forwarded to the Director or Assistant Director by 9AM. If a child is coming to use the skate park they cannot use the camp bus for transportation. Parents must understand that if their child has permission to use the skate park, they are not considered in camp for that day and will not be supervised.
  • Tennis- Tennis is a now scheduled activity and is no longer a separate program.
  • Arts and crafts- Arts and crafts sessions are scheduled for each age group throughout the week. 
  • Sunscreen- Please be sure your child has sunscreen and a hat to protect them from the damaging rays of the sun. Children are responsible for supplying and applying their own sunscreen. Note: sunscreen is most effective when applied 15-30 minutes prior to exposure to the sun.
